Detailed Review

This is a detailed comparison review of the Rog Zephyrus G14 and the Apple Macbook Pro. Topics discussed here are the design and display, features, performance, battery. This review will help you choose which is better and why you should go for it.

INTRODUCTION

Rog Zephyrus G14

The Rog Zephyrus G14 is a gaming laptop. It has AniMe Matrix design in the back which is super cool, and AMD chipset and the 2060 GPU that can power through every single game out there and even intensive tasks. The battery life seems amazing and it’s got all the other basics like the keyboard and touchpad fairly good. This is not only a great ultraportable gaming laptop it’s also a great powerful laptop for anyone looking to do things like video editing. The Rog Zephyrus G14 is in its league like there is no other 14-inch laptop that has this much horsepower inside of it at this size.

Apple MacBook Pro

The Apple Macbook Pro is thin, light, powerful with a bright display, a shallow keyboard along with a huge multi-touch, glass trackpad with force-touch. They have the touch ID feature so you can train your finger to the Touch ID sensor which allows you to unlock the Macbook Pro, use ApplePay, or even authorize purchases on iTunes getting to the accessories. You get a lot of improved features from the previous generations. Its a nice laptop and comes with a 96-watt brick in the box.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

Rog Zephyrus G14

The Rog Zephyrus G14 is truly exciting for two reasons, one is this dot matrix display and number two is the 4000 series AMD chips combined with Nvidia GPUs. The finish looks great but what makes this stand out is the dot matrix design aka the AniMe Matrix. This kind of an led display has this cool RGB logo with this cool effect by default and you can completely customize this via ASUS Armoury Crate software where you can set it to anything like a text showup, a gif, apart from that you can also enable a visualizer on the matrix so whenever you play some music you get this very cool visualizer. You can also set it to show notifications for any new emails, the battery percentage, and the time. You can make sure this shows up even when you close the lid so you can keep track of the time the mails etc. Its made up of magnesium alloy so technically it’s metal but if you feel it it does feel like plastic, top of the lid is a little squishy but nothing too concerning. The one thing that Asus continues to do is include an ergo hinge on their laptops which raises the deck of the laptop to allow airflow on the bottom this helps big time to keep the laptop cool. The port situation is also great on the left-hand side you have your barrel connector you have a full-size HDMI port USB type-c, you can charge the laptop using this port, you have an audio jack and then on the other side you have your Kensington lock, two more USB ports, and another USB type-c port.

Apple Macbook Pro

The Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch 6K LCD that can hit 1,600 nits of peak brightness, with 1,000 nits of sustained brightness from a full-array local dimming backlight composed of 576 special blue LEDs. It supports true 10-bit color and the full DCI-P3 color gamut, and Apple says that it can hit a million-to-one contrast ratio using certain industry-standard test patterns. There are four USB-C connections on the back, but they are far more confusing than you’d expect. One of the USB-C connectors, marked by a lightning bolt icon, is a Thunderbolt 3 port, which is how you plug the display into your Mac. The other three USB-C connectors operate at different speeds, depending on your computer: most supported Macs can only run them at USB 2 speeds, but the 16-inch MacBook Pro can run them at the USB 3 speeds because its video card supports a new standard called Display Stream Compression that leaves enough bandwidth on the Thunderbolt bus for faster USB connections. The Mac Pro does not offer video cards that support DSC, in case you’re wondering.

PERFORMANCE

Rog Zephyrus G14

The highlight of the Rog Zephyrus G14 is its seven-nanometer 4g AMD CPUs that are super powerful and they’re supposed to be the ones that truly beat Intel. The Rog Zephyrus G14 has the AMD CPUs coupled with either Nvidia GTX GPUs or the RTX GPUs. It has a super-powerful Ryzen 9 4900HS chipset. Other specs include 16 GB DDR for RAM and 1tb PCIe 3rd gen SSD so these specs are good. The Ryzen 9 4900HS is supremely powerful, especially in multi-core tests. GPU performance is also fantastic the RTX 2060 Max-Q is 10 to 15 slower than a regular RTX 2060 but it’s still faster than a GTX 1660 Ti. The gameplay is fantastic but you’re limited to 60 hertz so it doesn’t feel as fast and smooth as a higher refresh display but overall fantastic performance. Heat, it gets a little toasty it can get up to 90 degrees celsius and the clock speeds are technically a little bit lower than some of Intel’s processors but because you have those two extra cores it makes a huge difference in the applications that you’re using. The one area that kind of suffers though is fan noise like this is a very loud laptop. They were able to cram in a good cooling solution but there are some pitfalls, one 8 gigabytes of RAM is soldered onto the motherboard which means you only have one slot to work with you can upgrade this laptop to a maximum of 24 gigabytes there’s one drive it’s not the fastest drive but you can swap it out for something faster and bigger if you want to.

Apple Macbook Pro

When it comes down to performance you can see some respectable CPU gains, thanks to the new Skylake Processors which are clocked at 2.9 GHz. There is a huge improvement in terms of graphics performance so any 3D accelerated or GPU intensive apps should take advantage of it we also get much faster SSD’s doubling the performance of the previous model. It also has dedicated graphics. We have the IntelCore I 9, we have 64 gigs of RAM we have new graphics cards and 4 terabytes of storage here there’s also an option to go up to 8 terabytes of storage. This laptop is a little bit thicker and in a bit of a larger footprint the heatsink is a bit bigger and the fan blades are a little bit larger and they have some room to rearrange components inside in a way that landed at 28 percent better thermal efficiency and basically, that’s allowed the MacBook Pro to stay at higher clock speeds from much longer durations without throttling down. You have speaker grilles, the speakers are coming out of the vents along the backside of the MacBook Pro, these vents are good for better cooling.

FEATURES

Rog Zephyrus G14

For a gaming laptop, this is very lightweight and very portable it’s 17.9 millimeters thin and 1.6kgs which is amazing given the power this laptop packs. when it comes to the ports on the left you get the Asus proprietary charging port HDMI USB C 3.2 port which supports PD charging and display port and a 3.5 mm audio jack which also can work for the mics on the right you get a Kensington lock port two USB A 3.2 ports and a USB-C 3.2 port. The keyboard is a wide backlit keyboard, the keys are fairly big and well-spaced, the layout is good too. There are also these four additional keys to lower volume, increase volume, mute mic, and open the Armoury Crate software which is nice to have. The typing experience is pretty good but there are a couple of things like the white backlight, it does not play well with the white keyboard because there’s just no contrast between these keys and the keys have a very soft feel to it which you may like or not it’s a very subjective thing so it’s up to you also there’s a fingerprint scanner in the power button that well just works fine. When it comes to software there’s Windows 10 home onboard with a few Asus tricks so first up there’s the Armoury Crate software which shows you all the GPU and CPU stats, the memory and storage and it has these different performance modes with different graphs. Another feature of the Armoury Crate software is its ability to change the colors of the display based on the game you’re playing.

Apple Macbook Pro

They have the touch ID feature so you can train your finger to the Touch ID sensor which allows you to unlock the Macbook Pro, use ApplePay, or even authorize purchases on iTunes getting to the accessories. The keyboard is wide, flat and much more shallow, and use a new, second-generation butterfly mechanism, borrowed from the Macbook, it is loud but it’s much more clicky so it does make more noise, but it feels better. The keyboard is very fast and responsive and you can type on this very lightly. The rest of the touch-bar is set aside for apps so basically, apps dictate what controls you see here and you can customize this and it’s pretty easy to do so but basically, these are tools. They allow you to interact with the app in a new way so, for example, you could get some media controls with a scrubber that allows you to scrub through a video you also get some markup tools for bolding, italicizing or underlining text, there are also some of our browsers controls so you can open up a new tab or scroll through our open tabs and even see a preview of each app within that touch bar, there are shortcuts to your favorites and many more features, some other cool features include Final Cut editing tools or if you’re writing a message you can bring up an emoji keyboard that allows you to select your emoji or even long press on them to select a different skin color. You also get a little bit of iOS so if you’re composing a message, you have the option to bring up some word completion to anticipate what you’re typing.

BATTERY

Rog Zephyrus G14

The Rog Zephyrus G14 features a 76 watt-hour battery and comes with a 180-watt charger in the box. When it comes to battery life this gaming laptop can compete with ultra works out they’re all thanks to the power-efficient CPU means it said to last more than 10 hours on a full charge and that’s obviously without gaming but it sounds impressive. As for the charging, the full-size 180-watt charger gives you the full power of the laptop but you can also charge the laptop using a 65 or USB C PD charger which you’ll have to buy separately.

Apple Macbook Pro

The Apple Macbook Pro has a 96-watt brick. This brick is like a Universal charger. You get an on-screen time of 10 to 11 hours. Even with heavy usage like browsing, editing videos, checking emails, watching movies it will last for around 10 hours. The battery might drain fast if many apps are running at the same time but its not a problem because you have the universal 96-watt brick which is a fast charger and saves you time.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both the Rog Zephyrus G14 and Apple Macbook Pro are amazing laptops but if you have to choose one among these two you should go for the Apple Macbook Pro. The Apple Macbook Pro is not just a good laptop for gaming for also for basic tasks it performs very well. When you consider the design, display, features, performance, the battery of these two laptops, the Apple Macbook Pro wins in most of the departments. The only minus point here is its price, but if you are ready to invest in something worth you should do it on the Apple Macbook Pro.
